The Longhorns scored a field goal on the ensuing drive to extend their lead to 14.
Texas dominated the first half, out-gaining Michigan 279-88. It added a touchdown late in the second quarter following a fumble by Wolverines tight end Colston Loveland to enter the half leading 24-3.
With or without the Wolverines' miscues, the Longhorns were the better team through the first 30 minutes.
It was an early statement for Texas (1-0), ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press rankings, over No. 10 Michigan (1-0) in the season's first game between two top-10 teams.
