With A.J. Brown out, Eagles third-year WR seems ready for expanded role

With star wide receiver A.J. Brown set to miss Monday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Eagles need Jahan Dotson to step up.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, three-time Pro Bowler Brown (hamstring) was downgraded to out on Sunday.

Dotson — whom the Eagles recently acquired in a trade with the Washington Commanders — indicated he should deliver against the Falcons.

"I'm extremely comfortable," Dotson said after Saturday's practice, per Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "We're preparing right now if A.J. is playing. That's the goal. But if my opportunities do come, I'm going to take full advantage of them. That's what I was pretty much brought here to do. Take advantage of every single opportunity that's given to me."

Former first-round pick Dotson must capitalize on his opportunities to salvage his career. In two seasons with Washington, the 24-year-old recorded 84 receptions for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdown catches. Per Frank, he only surpassed 60 receiving yards five times in 26 starts.

Dotson had no receptions in a 34-29 Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers and posted a below-average 51.6 Pro Football Focus grade. He's still learning the playbook, though, and could eventually start producing better numbers with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, a two-time Pro Bowler.

"I always tell people when they ask me, it's kind of like learning a different language," Dotson said of learning the offense. "Things mean hello, but people say it in different ways and in different languages. So, that's the best way I can put it. I've been getting it down pretty good. I have a lot of confidence going into Monday night."

Despite Brown's injury, the Eagles (1-0) are still favored against the Falcons (0-1). ESPN Analytics gives them a 64 percent chance to win Monday's matchup. Dotson flourishing vs. Atlanta would show he could become another dependable target for Philadelphia.
