Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh seemingly uncertain about QB Justin Herbert's status for Week 3

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert's status still seems unclear heading into Sunday's road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a 26-3 Week 2 win over the Carolina Panthers, Herbert suffered an ankle injury but didn't miss any snaps. However, he did go in for X-rays. Head coach Jim Harbaugh didn't seem willing to make any predictions about whether he'll play Sunday vs. the Steelers.

"Crystal ball? Expect him to get better every day," Harbaugh said Wednesday, via The Athletic's Daniel Popper. "I was just in a good meeting with him. Said he was feeling much better and good today."

ESPN's Kris Rhim reported Herbert didn't practice Wednesday. Sitting him could be a precaution, but it raises more questions about his health.

Per Popper, Harbaugh added backup QB Easton Stick will start if Herbert can't play against the Steelers (2-0), but it's still too early to consider hypotheticals.

Last season, Stick — a former fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State — replaced Herbert after he suffered a season-ending right finger fracture in a Week 13 loss to the Denver Broncos. Stick went 0-4 as a starter, completing 65.3% of his passes for three touchdowns and one interception, posting a slightly below-average 88.6 passer rating.

This preseason, Stick seemed to regress. According to Fox Sports, he went 25-of-55 passing for 303 yards and one TD.

Pittsburgh's pass-rush features edge-rusher T.J. Watt. Through two games, Watt has posted a 91.6 Pro Football Focus pass-rushing grade, third at his position.

Whether Herbert plays or not, L.A. should rely on its ground attack. The Chargers (2-0) rank second in the NFL in rushing yards (197.5) behind the Green Bay Packers.
