Paolo Banchero is one of the best young players in the Eastern Conference. The Orlando Magic forward won Rookie of the Year after entering the league as the first overall pick in 2022. He followed up his strong debut season with an All-Star selection as a sophomore. As such, he's already earning a highly respectable reputation around the NBA.
During a recent episode of "Podcast P with Paul George," the Philadelphia 76ers star noted how Banchero is primed to take another leap in his development. He praised the Magic star's style of play and physicality.
"I think who’s shown that they’re ready for that next jump and I think was a star. For sure Paolo," George said. "He's a grown man...He's a force. He's great in transition. He's great in isolation. He's great at sizing dudes up, using his strength to get by and blow by...I think naturally, he's a driver, he likes the contact, he plays physical."
Building around an NBA player under 25 and it CAN'T be Luka, Ant or Wemby...

Here's who PG is rockin' with pic.twitter.com/x9ELwhh8Zr
Last season, Banchero averaged 12.7 drives per game, shooting 43.7% from the field. He passed out of those drives 31.1% of the time, which should encourage Magic fans as he continues to develop his passing and processing speed. He also averaged 3.6 isolation possessions per game during the regular season, converting his shots at a 44.8% clip while drawing shooting fouls 2.8% of the time.
Banchero has already proved himself to be a future star in the NBA. However, there are ways he can continue to round out his game. Last season, he shot 33.9% from three-point range on 4.4 attempts per game. Unless he can begin improving his conversion rate from deep, defenses may choose to sag off him and load up for his drives, thus making it easy to counter his physicality and force the ball out of his hands. He's also a 73.1% shooting from the free-throw line.
If Banchero can improve his shooting stroke while maintaining his aggressive style of play, he will be a force for years to come. Receiving such high praise from George so early into his career is a sign that he's already impressing some of his more accomplished peers. However, if he wants to continue rising the ranks of the NBA and potentially help the Magic contend for a championship, he must continue to work on his weaker areas.
Judging by Banchero's first two years in the NBA, he's going to become a star. The exciting part of Orlando is that Franz Wagner could be right there with him.
