The easiest way to get a locker room to buy in to a quarterback is by winning, and that's exactly what Justin Fields has done for the 3-0 Steelers.
Fields' play has apparently done most of the talking throughout Pittsburgh's three-game win streak in which he's thrown for 518 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 90 yards and another score.
According to rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson, Fields only speaks when he needs to, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
"He's a quiet guy but he's vocal when he needs to be. He's a great leader, great player, just someone people love to play for," Wilson said. "I love having that guy as my quarterback, someone who's tough, someone who's physical, someone that's just got that 'it' factor."
It seems like the Steelers locker room is starting to view Fields as its QB1, and rightfully so. However, Russell Wilson is still listed as such on the team's depth chart.
That is because Wilson has been sidelined as he continues to recover from his calf injury, and head coach Mike Tomlin said that won't change until Wilson has a chance to take back the job when healthy.
"There's no need (to name Fields the starter)," Tomlin said. "When Russ gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make, I'll make it and I'll announce it and I'll be really transparent about it."
Until then, Fields will remain the undoubted starter, who brings a much-needed calmness to a young and budding offense.
"I feel like he's one of those laid-back players, even just his personality just walking around off the field," second-year tight end Darnell Washington said. "He's just one of those calm dudes, personality wise. So that just carried over to the field."
Fields has a chance to keep Pittsburgh undefeated with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts (1-2) in Week 4.
As long as he continues playing at a high level, his teammates will be happy to follow him.
"He's playing good. Me personally, that's what I take from it," wide receiver George Pickens said. "He don't really say as much, so I wouldn't say vocal leadership. Probably him going out every day in practice."
