Even before veteran quarterback Russell Wilson went down with a lingering calf injury that kept him out of action across the season's first three weeks, analysts wondered if he and 25-year-old signal-caller Justin Fields could coexist in the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room if Fields earned the starting job.
On the latest of the "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward" podcast, Fields touched upon his working relationship with Wilson this month.
"Russ has been great for me so far," Fields explained, as shared by Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "...I can ask him a question and he's going to tell me what he thinks. He's just always cheering the guys on. Even his time being out, he's a huge supporter, so it's been great having him there for sure."
Wilson went into Labor Day weekend as Pittsburgh's QB1 but then reaggravated a calf injury he first suffered early into training camp. In Wilson's place, Fields guided the Steelers to three straight victories to open the campaign and, in the eyes of many, has played well enough to remain atop the depth chart whenever the 35-year-old is cleared to return.
As recently as last week, it was suggested that the Steelers were worried about Wilson becoming "frustrated about not playing" whenever he's healthy. While the situation could change as Wilson recovers, Fields indicated that the one-time Super Bowl champion had been an ideal mentor throughout September.
The fact that Fields was largely a game manager across Pittsburgh's first three contests has some assuming head coach Mike Tomlin still thinks, in the words of ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, that Wilson holds "better command of the offense than Fields." Fields could silence such talk by producing a breakout performance in this Sunday's matchup at the 1-2 Indianapolis Colts."He's had so much success," Fields added about Wilson. "He's seen so many defenses. He's played so much ball to where I know if I can just pick up on how he prepares, how he goes throughout his week, what he does to recover and stuff like that. In terms of him being in the room with me, I love it personally because there's definitely a learning aspect and really just how he goes about it every day."
