Arkansas ends Southwest Classic series in AT&T Stadium as only they could

The series between Arkansas and Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium ended on Saturday and the conclusion of the Southwest Classic in Arlington, Texas, had a very fitting ending.

Going into Saturday's game, Texas A&M had won 11 of the 12 games in the series since it was permanently moved to Arlington in 2013. Arkansas had suffered through many heartbreaking losses over that 12-year period and the Razorbacks were dealt one more tearjerker to end the series in appropriate fashion.

The game was a defensive slugfest and was tied at 14-14 through three quarters before an Arkansas field goal a little more than a minute into the fourth quarter gave the team a 17-14 lead. Texas A&M's offense subsequently woke from its slumber, driving for a go-ahead touchdown with nine minutes to play in regulation.

After the teams traded punts, QB Taylen Green and the Arkansas offense had two minutes and 50 seconds to write their name in the history books.

In quintessential Arkansas fashion, however, Green fumbled the football on their final possession, handing the No. 24 Aggies a 21-17 win and continuing HC Sam Pittman's abysmal record in one-score games.

Arkansas fought until the bitter end on Saturday, but too many finishes against the Aggies have ended with a bitter taste, rather than a sweet one. If Arkansas is ever going to take the next step under Pittman, changes to late-game decision making and mindsets must happen.

The Razorbacks fell to 3-2 with the loss and will welcome No. 5 Tennessee into Razorback Stadium on Oct. 5.
