The National Hockey League has been filled with news in the past few days.
An important player in the Winnipeg Jets franchise is set to sign a one-day contract with the team and retire a Jet. Moreover, a Jet defenceman is set to undergo surgery, as is another important defenceman for a Pacific Division team.
Let’s dig into all of that in the latest Around the NHL!
What an unfortunate end to the career of Bryan Little. On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets announced that the forward will sign a one-day contract with the team and retire a Jet, with the team honouring him on Oct. 20th’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Selected 12th-overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2006 draft, Little was one of just four players remaining in the league to play with the Atlanta Thrashers. The only three remaining are Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, and Blake Wheeler.
Little spent his entire playing career with the Thrashers/Jets franchise, scoring 217 goals and 521 points in 843 games, including a career-high 31 goals in the 2008-09 season with the Thrashers. His career-high in points came in 2013-14, when he scored 23 goals and 64 points with the Jets.
Most recently, Little played seven games with the Jets in 2019-20, but was hit in the ear with a puck, which ended his playing career. However, he was still under contract until the end of last season, and the Jets traded the contract to the Arizona Coyotes in Mar. 2022.
Sticking with the Jets, their defenceman Logan Stanley will miss at least four weeks due to knee surgery the team announced on Friday.

The 6’7”, 231 lbs defenceman was selected 18th-overall in the 2016 draft by the Jets, but only played 25 games with the team in 2023-24. He was often found in the press box as a healthy scratch. Stanley played more games than the season prior though, as he missed time in 2022-23 thanks to two different injuries.
In 2021-22, Stanley played a career-high 58 games with a career-high 13 points. So far in his career, he’s played 139 games with four goals and 22 points.
Drew Doughty is another defenceman set to undergo surgery, as he’ll get surgery on his fractured left ankle, the Los Angeles Kings announced. He’ll be month-to-month.

On Wednesday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights, he got tangled with his former teammate, Tanner Pearson, and went ankles first into the boards. The right-shot defenceman needed the help of trainers and teammates to get off the ice.
It’s a big blow for the Kings, as Doughty is still playing top-pair minutes for the team. Last season, the 34-year-old scored 15 goals and 50 points in 82 games, the most goals he has scored since his sophomore season in 2009-10 (16).
