Steelers' Justin Fields loses fumble on ugliest play of NFL season

Justin Fields played virtually mistake-free football through the first three games of the season, but the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback committed one of the ugliest blunders of the year during Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Steelers were trailing 17-3 and had the ball deep in Colts territory midway through the third quarter at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. Fields took a shotgun snap and was immediately pressured, so he ran backward to try to escape the rush.

Fields ran back into Pittsburgh territory before losing his balance and taking what looked like a brutal sack. It was worse than that, however, as he also fumbled the ball, and the Colts recovered.

That play just got worse and worse the longer it went on. Luckily for Fields, the Colts missed a field goal on their ensuing possession. Still, the fumble may have cost the Steelers a field goal of their own.

The turnover was only the second for Fields this season, which is a big reason the Steelers were 3-0 entering Sunday’s game. There have been a lot of questions about what Pittsburgh will do when Russell Wilson is fully recovered from his calf injury, but Fields seems to have a good outlook on the situation.
