Breanna Stewart's historic outing helps Liberty take Game 1 over Aces in WNBA semifinals

The New York Liberty took Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals, defeating the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces, 87-77, behind a historic outing from forward Breanna Stewart.

The two-time MVP led the way, becoming only the second player in WNBA history to record at least 34 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting .632% from the field or better, per Stathead. Stewart joins Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, who accomplished the feat on Sept. 25 against the Phoenix Mercury.

The Liberty ran their offense through Stewart, who was extremely efficient overall (12-of-19) and from beyond the arc (2-of-4). Meanwhile, she produced most of her offense from the perimeter, showcasing incredible versatility for a player who generally starts at forward or center.

Stewart looked extra motivated to beat the Aces on Sunday, which shouldn't come as a surprise. Last season, Las Vegas ended New York's playoff run in the Finals, winning 3-1 to win back-to-back titles.

While the six-time All-Star stood out, she wasn't alone. Guard Sabrina Ionescu played a significant role in the victory, recording 21 points (9-of-16) with three three-pointers, five assists and four rebounds.

Conversely, Kelsey Plum (24 points), 2024 MVP A'ja Wilson (21 points) and Jackie Young (17 points) paced the Aces' effort. However, it wasn't enough as the trio mustered most of Las Vegas' offensive output, with only one player (Alysha Clark, nine points) finishing with more than four points.

Since coming up short against the Aces in the 2023 WNBA Finals, losing in four games, the Liberty have owned Wilson and company. Following Sunday's victory, New York improved to 4-0 against Las Vegas this year, and now, only two more victories separate the franchise from booking a return trip to the championship round.
