NCAAF betting: What we learned from CFB Week 5, with tips for Week 6

Suffice it to say, Week 5 of the college football season did not disappoint. That big SEC game down in Tuscaloosa lived up to its hype, and players across the country gave fans and bettors reasons to back them.

How can last weekend's shenanigans help us place our bets next week? Here's what we learned from Week 5, and what we are already looking for ahead of Week 6.

It wasn't just the AP poll that shifted ...

That Alabama-Georgia game didn't just alter the college football power rankings and install the Crimson Tide at the top. It also impacted the odds of end-of-season honors.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck entered the season as the +700 favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, but he is now a 30-1 long shot at DraftKings to win the award while Alabama QB Jalen Milroe is the +250 favorite. Alabama is also now listed at +350 to win the CFP title, while the Dawgs have dropped to +650 after being the favorite heading into Week 1. (Ohio State is the current favorite despite not facing top-tier competition yet this season, but that's an argument for another time.)

Georgia has the opportunity to bounce back in Week 6 against an embattled Auburn team. However, it looks like that loss to Alabama has knocked them out of the favorite spot on multiple fronts.

Here comes Colorado

Those who doubted Deion Sanders's Buffs ahead of the season may be eating their words right now. They are now second in the Big 12 after upending UCF 48-21, and Travis Hunter's Heisman odds at DK have shortened from 20-1 last week to 7-1.

Colorado now heads into its bye week, which will give them extra time to prepare for No. 20 Kansas State. The Wildcats are coming off of a big 42-20 win against Oklahoma State and are a legitimate playoff threat according to USA Today. Two more wins will get the Buffaloes into the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Suffice it to say, this team remains fun to watch -- and wager on.

Hopefully you backed ...

... Kyle Monangai to go off against Washington on Friday. Sports Illustrated suggested betting the Rutgers running back would eclipse 104.5 rushing yards, and he ended the day with 132 and a touchdown. He now ranks third nationally with 147.3 rushing yards per game, Rutgers reports.

Betting lines haven't been set yet for the Scarlet Knights' Week 6 in-conference showdown against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, but you can be sure there will be a prop or two for Monangai in there. Nebraska's defense is stingy and has flown under the radar so far this season, but slowing Monangai down doesn't appear to be in the cards for any team right now.

Looking ahead to Week 6

The national title rematch

It will be hard to compete with Georgia-Alabama, but Michigan-Washington should come pretty darn close.

The Wolverines moved up to 10th in the power ranking after winning a 27-24 nailbiter against a Minnesota team that put up 21 points in the fourth quarter. And the Huskies, well, we already talked about what Monangai and Rutgers did to them last week despite quarterback Will Rogers throwing for 306 yards with two touchdowns.

Washington is an early 2.5-point favorite at DK, but Sporting News isn't totally sold on backing them to get the revenge win.

"The Huskies will play with tempo, and that will test a Michigan defense that might not have SN Preseason All-American cornerback Will Johnson (shoulder)," they said. "The Wolverines also have a passing offense that ranks 119th in the FBS. Washington is still one of the most-penalized teams in college football (80.8 ypg.), and the Wolverines can run the ball. The Huskies are a popular pick here. Maybe too popular. "
