Will 2025 NFL Draft see record number of QBs selected in first round?

The record for the most quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL Draft is six. That record, first set in 1983, was matched in 2024. The record might be broken in 2025, with well over seven highly-regarded QB prospects.

Per Mel Kiper Jr., the top 10 QB prospects for the 2025 draft are:

1
Shedeur Sanders
Colorado Buffaloes
2
Carson Beck
Georgia Bulldogs
3
Quinn Ewers
Texas Longhorns
4
Cam Ward
Miami Hurricanes
5
Jalen Milroe
Alabama Crimson Tide
6
Drew Allar
Penn State Nittany Lions
7
Jaxson Dart
Ole Miss Rebels
8
Garrett Nussmeier
LSU Tigers
9
Miller Moss
USC Trojans
10
Will Howard
Ohio State Buckeyes

Sanders, Beck, Ward, Dart and Howard are seniors or graduate students.

Ewers, Milroe, Allar, Nussmeier and Moss are juniors or redshirt juniors, with eligibility to remain at the collegiate level in 2025 should they so choose.

In a recent mock draft by CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso, Ward goes No. 2, Moss goes No. 3, Beck goes No. 6, Dart goes No. 14 and Nussmeier goes No. 16. Although Trapasso did not include Sanders and Ewers as first-round selections in this mock, he expressly acknowledged that both of them "very well could...be selected in the first round." If so, a new record would be set, with seven QBs picked in the first round.

Of course, a degree of speculation is involved in forecasting draft selections, particularly seven months beforehand. A host of variables are at play. For instance, QBs like Moss, Milroe and Nussmeier might decide to play another year at the collegiate level. Nevertheless, the possibility of the selection of a record-setting number of QBs in the 2025 NFL Draft is intriguing, and it is interesting to assess whether the possibility may become reality.

Fox Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang notes that the 6-foot-5 Allar is already generating considerable "draft buzz," with his "ideal blend of size, arm strength and an aversion to interceptions."

Per NFL Draft Buzz, LSU's Nussmeier "could easily hear his name called on Day 1 of the draft.

In a Bleacher Report mock, Ohio State's Howard is the No. 21 pick.

In a recent Sports Illustrated top 10 mock draft, Ward goes No. 2, Sanders goes No. 4 and Milroe goes No. 8.

Thus, all 10 of Kiper's top QB prospects are first-round selections in reputable mock drafts.

Other well-regarded QB prospects for the 2025 NFL draft include Taylen Green (redshirt junior, Arkansas Razorbacks) and Kyle McCord (senior, Syracuse Orange).

Time will tell whether the record of six quarterbacks selected in the first round will be surpassed in the 2025 NFL Draft, but it certainly looks like a possibility as we move toward the middle of the college football season.
