Losing key WR to IR should have Cowboys rethinking Davante Adams trade interest

The Dallas Cowboys will be without one of their starting wide receivers on Sunday. Brandin Cooks was placed on injured reserve Saturday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cooks will miss at least the next four games with a knee injury, a tough stretch that sees the team play the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1), Detroit Lions (3-1), San Francisco 49ers (2-2) and Atlanta Falcons (3-2).

The 11th-year veteran was off to a poor start in 2024, tallying only 91 yards and a single touchdown over four games. But he has been a key cog in the Dallas offense since he arrived in 2023.

Cooks logged 657 yards and eight scores last season, good for third on the team behind tight end Jake Ferguson and star wideout CeeDee Lamb, who signed a massive extension in August.

Speculation has been brewing over whether Dallas would consider acquiring Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams, who requested a trade on Tuesday. The Cowboys are reportedly on the list of teams Adams would find acceptable moving to.

However, team senior vice president Stephen Jones, son of owner Jerry Jones, put a damper on that speculation Thursday when he told San Antonio's Sports Star a trade for Adams would be "a long putt."

"No. I don’t think there is anything to that. We just signed our No. 1 guy (CeeDee Lamb) and (Adams) is a No. 1 receiver," Jones said on the radio broadcast. "When you have the challenges cap-wise that we have, that would be a long putt for us."

Regardless of the cap situation, Jones' father was adamant in April that the team would be going "all-in" this season. A move for Adams would definitely back that motto up substantially.

Losing Cooks to injured reserve heading into a stretch of schedule that could see Dallas go 0-4 in that time might warrant busting the bank to keep any championship aspirations alive.
