Steelers HC finally answers big question about QB Russell Wilson

For the first five weeks of the season, Mike Tomlin did not have to choose between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, but the Steelers coach finally had to name a starting quarterback.

Wilson returned to practice this week as a full participant for the first time since he suffered a calf injury during the preseason. Tomlin confirmed on Friday that the veteran will be active for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders and will be the backup to Fields.

Tomlin still found a way to play coy, however. He emphasized that Wilson needs to get back up to speed after missing so much time.

“I thought he had a good week. He’s proven his health, now it’s just a matter of knocking the rust off,” Tomlin said. “He’s probably gonna be active as the No. 2 quarterback. I like what I’ve seen out here. But, again, health and rust are two different things.”

Wilson beat out Fields for the starting job during the offseason. Fields then started in Week 1 after Wilson suffered a setback with his calf injury. The former Chicago Bears quarterback has played well enough to lead Pittsburgh to a 3-2 record, though they have lost two straight.

Fields has accounted for eight total touchdowns and thrown just one interception, which is why there is no need for a quarterback change. But with Wilson healthy, a switch can now be made anytime. Tomlin knows that, but for now, he is going with the “rust” excuse for why Fields has been given the nod over Wilson.
