Pete Alonso gave his New York Mets a much-needed lift to start Game 5 of the NLCS on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field in Queens, New York.
Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty allowed a leadoff hit to Francisco Lindor and then walked Brandon Nimmo to put two on. Mark Vientos flew out, which brought Alonso to the plate.
The Mets’ clean-up hitter worked the count to 2-1 and then swatted a low slider deep to center field for a three-run home run to give his team a 3-0 lead.

That was the fourth home run of the postseason for Alonso, who has driven in nine runs this postseason.
The Mets had lost the last two games at home by a combined score of 18-2. To get a three-run home run from Alonso in the first to take the lead was a huge boost for the club in terms of their confidence and belief.
The Mets entered Game 5 down 3-1 in the series and facing elimination against the Dodgers, who are a win away from reaching the World Series.
