Former Pistons coach Monty Williams lands unexpected new job

Monty Williams is back as a head coach, but definitely not in the league that you would expect.

NBA writer Chris Haynes reported Sunday that former Detroit Pistons head coach Williams has landed a new job. Williams, accepting the head-coaching position at TMI Episcopal prep school in San Antonio, Tex. TMI Episcopal is a 6-12 school that Williams’ son Elijah currently attends.

Williams was the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year with the Phoenix Suns and he has 381 career head coaching wins in 10 seasons with three different teams (including an NBA Finals berth). Thus, it is pretty staggering to see him now moving into a coaching job at a college prep school.

But Williams got fired in June by the Pistons with a massive amount of money still left on his contract. That means he is getting paid regardless and can afford to do anything that he wants right now. While Williams had since been linked to one major NBA head coaching job, it appears that he is happy with going the family route and coaching his son instead.
