The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) handily defeated the New York Jets (2-5) 37-15 on "Sunday Night Football," but it wasn't pretty from the start.
The Steelers found themselves trailing 15-6 late in the second quarter. During that stretch, fans were not shy in voicing their frustrations, booing the offense and chanting "Justin Fields" on several occasions.
Quarterback Russell Wilson didn't let that get to him, however.
"I really believe in being neutral, you know, not being too high, not being too low," Wilson said via the team's transcript. "My old mental coach, who passed away a couple years ago, used to always say, you know, stay the course."
That's exactly what the 35-year-old did as he finished the game with 264 passing yards and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing).
It wasn't surprising to see Wilson having to knock off some rust considering he's been sidelined for much of the season with a calf injury.
Wilson just kept telling head coach Mike Tomlin that something was going to eventually click on offense.
"I kept telling Coach, 'Hey, I'm going to get hot here," he added. "And sure enough we did. The guys did a tremendous job up front giving me enough time to make throws. Guys made plays down the field."
Luckily for Pittsburgh, that's exactly what happened as the offense scored 31 unanswered points in a very convincing win.
It was the most points the Steelers have scored since quarterback Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season. So it's safe to say Wilson has earned himself another start.
Pittsburgh hosts the New York Giants (2-5) on "Monday Night Football" in Week 8 and Tomlin hopes his veteran quarterback can build off his regular-season debut.
"I thought he was excellent," Tomlin said. "I thought he got better as the game went on. But I'm not surprised by that. It's been a while since he played some ball, but I thought he settled in, knocked the rust off and distributed the ball around and played well."
