Legendary MLB father-son duo to attend Lakers' season-opener for potential NBA history

The Los Angeles Lakers begin their 2024-25 regular season on Tuesday night at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It could be the first time that four-time MVP LeBron James and his eldest son, rookie guard Bronny James, share the court together (outside of the preseason) in an NBA contest. Whenever the time comes for pair to share the spotlight, it will be a historic moment, marking the first time a father and son have ever played in an NBA game together, let alone on the same team.

Among the thousands of fans at the Crypto.com Arena for the opener will be two MLB legends who are familiar with making history.

Hall of Fame centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. revealed in the most recent episode of "The Road to Cooperstown" podcast that he and his father, former All-Star outfielder Ken Griffey, will be in attendance on Tuesday night.

"Have you chatted at all with LeBron about playing with Bronny? Has he asked your advice? Have you given some advice from your own experiences?" podcast host Jon Morosi asked.

"No, we haven't talked yet. I'm actually going to go to the game. I'm gonna take my dad," Griffey Jr. said. "First father and son to play baseball, now first father and son to play basketball, so it's a big deal for my dad and I to be there. We made history, now we get to watch history, so that's going to be cool about it."

The elder Griffey played 19 MLB seasons from 1973-91, spending parts of 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, making all three of his All-Star teams with the franchise and winning World Series titles with the "Big Red Machine" in 1975 and 1976. After playing his first nine campaigns with the Reds, the now-74-year-old suited up for the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves, before returning to Ohio for his second stint with Cincinnati.

"Junior" was selected first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1987 and made it to the show in 1989. The duo became the first father and son teammates in big league history when Griffey signed with the Mariners on Aug. 29, 1990.

The pair played 51 games together with Seattle before the two-time World Series champion retired in June 1991.

King James was born on Dec. 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio, five years before Griffey Jr.'s MLB debut. The 20-time All-Star was picked first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft, during Griffey Jr.'s fourth season with the Reds. Bronny James was born on Oct. 6, 2004.

The 1997 AL MVP played his final MLB game on May 31, 2010, just 18 days after LBJ's final contest during his first tenure with the Cavaliers.

LeBron said on numerous occasions during Bronny's teenage years that his goal was to share the court with his oldest son someday. Now, that time could be just over 24 hours away, and he'll have some MLB icons there to witness the potential magical moment.
