Jerry Jones' regret, recent comments send mixed signals on Mike McCarthy's future

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been defending head coach Mike McCarthy for weeks, if not months, amid the team's slow start to the 2024 season.

As the Cowboys enter Week 8 coming off their bye at 3-3, Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan's "Shan & RJ" show on Tuesday.

During his interview, the 82-year-old made comments that seemed to send mixed signals on his mindset regarding McCarthy's future at the helm.

Since Jones took over the franchise in 1989, the only time he dismissed a head coach during the middle of a season was 14 years ago. Jones said on Tuesday that he regretted that decision.

That would likely indicate that the longtime owner will stick with McCarthy at least through the 2024 campaign, no matter how bad things may get.

On the other hand, Jones said something later in his appearance that made it look like McCarthy is on the hot seat.

"The types of things that we all think we should be looking at is, well, we're designing bad plays or we're designing bad concepts. The facts are that there's some of that, but there's also some of execution, there's some of the talent. I like our talent. I really do like our talent. I like our young talent, but young talent has a few more mistakes associated with it then if you're dealing with a veteran player," Jones said.

If Jones believes that the team is "designing bad plays," that would likely mean that McCarthy is at least partially to blame.

Dallas has a difficult stretch of games coming out of its break, traveling to take on the San Francisco 49ers (3-4) and Atlanta Falcons (4-3) on the road in Weeks 8 and 9. The Cowboys will then return home (where the team is 0-3 this season) to host the Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) and Houston Texans (5-2) in Weeks 10 and 11 before going to the nation's capital to play the Washington Commanders (5-2) in Week 12.
