Top NASCAR free agents without a ride for 2025

As the 2024 NASCAR season draws to a close, many drivers find themselves still trying to iron out their plans for 2025.

With the high banks of Daytona welcoming the start of 2025 in less than four months, here are the top NASCAR free agents who are still looking for an opportunity for next season:

Corey Heim

Current ride: NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series No. 11, TRICON Garage
Heim might be the best prospect in NASCAR at the moment, but he hasn't officially announced his 2025 plans. Heim was tied to 23XI Racing's third entry over the summer, but that rumor has cooled off significantly.

Signs seem to point to Heim staying with TRICON for one more season — a reality the team would be happy to accept and the Truck Series would dread — but the 22-year-old is clearly ready for the Cup Series.

Keep an eye on LEGACY Motor Club as a potential Cup Series candidate to nab Heim in the offseason, as well as Sam Hunt Racing in the Xfinity Series. Heim has already made starts for both organizations in 2024, and both teams are under the Toyota umbrella.

Zane Smith

Current ride: NASCAR Cup Series No. 71, Spire Motorsports
The first 18 races of Smith's inaugural Cup Series season went terribly wrong, but in the 15 races since, he has been one of the best drivers in the series. Smith's average finish is a solid 15.9 over the second half of the season, including a runner-up finish at Nashville in which Smith nearly stole a victory and earned a playoff berth.

Smith's developmental deal with Trackhouse Racing was cut short over the summer, but he remains a strong candidate for Front Row Motorsports' third car in 2025. Smith won a Truck Series championship with the team in 2022, and has proved his worth as a Cup Series competitor. Don't be surprised if 2025 brings results in a homecoming for the 25-year-old.

Ryan Preece

Current ride: NASCAR Cup Series No. 41, Stewart-Haas Racing
It's true that Preece's middling body of work in the Cup Series hasn't put him high up on any free-agency lists, but he's a solid short-track racer who seldom tears up equipment.

Preece has been linked to several rides throughout the season — namely an Xfinity Series opportunity with the Haas Factory team before those seats were filled — but recent reports in The Athletic and elsewhere suggest that a third car at RFK Racing could see Preece rejoin forces with a former partner in Kroger. If that were to happen, Preece would have the best opportunity of his Cup Series career.

Daniel Hemric

Current ride: NASCAR Cup Series No. 31, Kaulig Racing
Hemric's second Cup Series season has done little to impress the masses, and it was confirmed in September that he won't return to Kaulig Racing next season. However, it'd be shocking to see the 2021 Xfinity Series champion be left without a ride for 2025 because, like Preece, he almost always brings home a clean car.

Hemric may not have a future — at least not a winning one — in the Cup Series, but he's a decent driver who deserves a competitive ride in the Xfinity Series. Don't be surprised if he's tapped for a part-time Xfinity Series opportunity with a top team.
