Knockout in main event leads thunderous night at UFC 308

Two knockouts and one dislocated jaw highlighted UFC 308.

Ilia Topuria held on to his featherweight title in the main event of the UFC showcase at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, defeating Max Holloway with a third-round knockout.

Topuria improved to 16-0 in his title-defending match, knocking out Holloway (26-8-0) with a devastating left hook to Holloway's jaw.

Shara "Bullet" Magomedov (15-0-0) recorded the night's other knockout in the second round of his middleweight bout against Armen Petrosyan (9-4-0).

His was more unorthodox. The talented middleweight spun with his back toward Petrosyan, who blocked his right-handed strike. However, Magomedov quickly turned back and landed a knockout hit with a left backfist.

In the co-main event, Khamzat Chimaev (14-0-0) defeated Robert Whittaker (27-8-0) via a face crank submission. During his post-match interview with Daniel Cormier, Cormier noted Whittaker dislocated his jaw while under Chimaev's choke.

Afterward, in Chimaev's post-match news conference, he expressed sorrow for breaking Whittaker's jaw, albeit with a savage caveat.

"[I feel] bad for that ... didn't mean to [break] somebody's chin. But this is my work, you know. Make somebody pain and make me happy," Chimaev said.

Ahead of the two headliners, Magomed Ankalaev improved to 20-1-1 with a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) over Aleksandar Rakic (14-5-0).

Following the win, he called out Alex Pereira (12-2-0) for his next light heavyweight fight. With help from a translator, Ankalaev said, "Alex, stop running away from me."

Pereira most recently defeated Khalil Rountree (14-6-0) by technical knockout (TKO) at UFC 307 on Oct. 5.

While Ankalaev awaits a potential fight with Pereira, fans won't have to wait long for the next big UFC event.

UFC 309 is scheduled for Nov. 16 and will be headlined by a heavyweight fight between Jon Jones (27-1-0) and Stipe Miocic (20-4).
