Anthony Davis is reaping the rewards of JJ Redick's new system

Over his first two games of the season, Anthony Davis is averaging 35.5 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. The future Hall of Famer is shooting 53.7% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. He's thriving as the Los Angeles Lakers' primary offensive option, leading by example on both sides of the floor.

Against the Phoenix Suns on Friday, Davis was a dominant force for the Lakers. He controlled the glass and was a reliable source of offense against a highly talented opponent during the Lakers' 123-116 win.

When speaking to the media after the game, Davis credited the offensive system JJ Redick has instilled since becoming head coach. The veteran big man noted how the Lakers are playing with more spacing and are enjoying their time on the court.

"The way the team is playing, guys are making big-time shots. We're making the right plays," Davis said. "Obviously, the schematics that (JJ Redick) put in, just helping me out, helping everyone out. We just have so much spacing. We're having fun doing it. That's one of our pillars is joy, and we're just having fun playing basketball."

Davis has long been earmarked as the Lakers' eventual successor to LeBron James. With the aging superstar approaching 40, it makes sense for Davis to step into a leading role. The results have been highly encouraging over his first two games as the primary option within Redick's system.

Of course, Davis must remain healthy to help the Lakers contend for a championship. A string of injuries has marred his tenure in Los Angeles. Redick must ensure he's managing his star's minutes and listening to the advice of his sports science staff.

Redick's system is unlocking the Lakers' upside on both ends of the floor. Davis has an opportunity to emerge as an MVP candidate this season. If he can stay healthy and continue to dominate, it could be a memorable season at the Crypto.com Arena.
