Despite unimpressive numbers, DeAndre Hopkins made his presence felt in Chiefs debut

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a quiet debut with the Kansas City Chiefs but still showed he could be the game changer they need.

Last week, K.C. acquired Hopkins in a trade with the Tennessee Titans. Thus, he had little time to learn the Chiefs' playbook, finishing with two receptions for 29 yards in Sunday's, 27-20, victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

But on the Chiefs' opening drive, Hopkins caught a 13-yard pass on a 3rd-and-7 at K.C.'s 33-yard line, which impressed starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During his postgame news conference, Mahomes called the catch "high-level stuff."

"For this down, in that situation, for him to run it and be in the right position, it shows that's he gonna fit perfectly in this offense," Mahomes said, via Jesse Newell of The Kansas City Star.

Hopkins' presence seemingly benefitted Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Through his first six games, Kelce only recorded 28 receptions for 245 yards and no touchdown catches. Against the Raiders, the nine-time Pro Bowler finished with season highs in receptions (10), receiving yards (90) and TD catches (one).

When Hopkins and Kelce were in the lineup, it likely prevented the Raiders from double-teaming the star TE, allowing him to get open more.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Kelce averaged 3.44 separation yards against the Raiders, above the league average (2.97).

"Honestly, [Hopkins'] knowledge, mentality and aura in the building definitely juiced us up," Kelce told The Athletic's Nate Taylor Sunday. "He gave us a lot of confidence. You know you've got an absolute dawg and a proven guy. When you get a swag champ in the building, all of a sudden everybody's aura goes up, and it's a whole lot more fun. I think he's going to help us even more."

In his Monday news conference, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, "You'll be able to see more [of Hopkins]" in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4).

When Hopkins gets up to speed, the former first-team All-Pro should give the Chiefs (7-0) even better Super Bowl odds.
