Five mind-boggling stats that show how poorly Anthony Richardson has played

After missing most of his rookie season because of an injury to his throwing shoulder, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson entered 2024 with expectations to prove himself as the face of the franchise.

In his second season, however, the fourth overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft has been anything but the QB his team desperately needs.

Here are five notable statistics through Richardson's six 2024 starts that encapsulate his poor play.

44.4% completion percentage is the lowest in NFL this season

Richardson's completion percentage is the worst in the NFL by a good margin. The next-lowest completion percentage among qualified QBs is by New England's Jacoby Brissett (59.1%).

In a Week 8 loss to Houston with the division lead on the line, Richardson went 10-for-32. His 31.3% completion percentage was the second-lowest completion rate by a player with 30 or more attempts in a game in the last 10 years, per Next Gen Stats.

If those numbers weren't already glaring enough, The Ringer's Austin Gayle posted a statistic to X that underscores Richardson's appallingly low completion rate.

57.2 passer rating is the worst in NFL this season

Richardson's passer rating isn't just the lowest in the league — it's 13.5 points lower than the next-worst passer rating this season (Tennessee Titans' Will Levis). Since 2018, no quarterback to attempt at least 14 passes per game has finished a season with a passer rating lower than 66.7, per Next Gen Stats via NFL Pro.

5.3% of pass attempts have been intercepted

One of the weakest aspects of Richardson's game is an inability to protect the ball. If he maintains his current interception rate, he will become the first quarterback since Hall of Famer Brett Favre with Minnesota in 2010 to have 5.3% or more of their pass attempts intercepted in a season.

Of his seven interceptions, only his unsuccessful Hail Mary attempt at the end of a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers reached the hands of a Colts receiver.

Four fumbles are tied for most in the NFL this season

Richardson's turnover trouble runs deeper than the passing game. His four fumbles are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers QB Justin Fields and New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson for the league lead.

He has notoriously struggled with handling snaps from the shotgun formation, the source of three of his four fumbles in 2024. Luckily for Richardson, only one of his fumbles has resulted in a turnover because of favorable bounces.

Averaging 13.2 air yards per attempt

Richardson has consistently been trying to play hero ball this season, testing the limits of his arm strength. Since 2018, no quarterback has averaged more than 11 air yards per attempt in a season, per Next Gen Stats via NFL Pro.

Despite connecting deep multiple times this season, his persistence in slinging it well beyond the first-down marker has been far from effective. He ranks third to last in passing yards per game (159.7) this season.
