The Indianapolis Colts failed to avoid being swept by the Houston Texans by losing in Week 8.
It has caused the "bench Anthony Richardson" crowd to grow larger than ever. And head coach Shane Steichen's comments during Monday's media availability only added fuel to the fire.
Let me start by saying that I think benching Anthony Richardson in favor of Joe Flacco would be a massive mistake. When the Colts decided to draft a prospect many viewed as "raw" and "inexperienced" due to him only starting 13 games during his three-year college career, they knew there would be ups and downs early in his career.
Not only did they internally know it, but they urged the public to be patient with him before he ever took a snap for the team. Yet now there's rumbling that the team could be considering benching Richardson after only ten starts in the NFL. If the Colts choose to bench Richardson at this stage, you will be crushing the spirits and confidence of the young QB. If you were going to have him sit and watch to develop, that had to have happened during his rookie season before you made him the starter and put the "C" on his chest as a captain on this team.
Many are banging the table for Joe Flacco to start because he " gives the team the best chance to win games." But I urge fans and those that cover the NFL who have this sentiment to realize that this Colts team isn't a Joe Flacco away from winning the Super Bowl. So even if Flacco adds a win or two to the Colts this season (which I'm honestly not sure about either), is it really a better option than allowing your 22-year-old QB, who is essentially a rookie on the field, to play through his struggles and give you a full season of tape to study and decide if he is the answer long term?
To me, the answer is a clear no, and I have a hard time seeing the Colts coaching staff or front office make that decision. So to those rumors I say, I'll believe it when I see it. But if they do indeed bench him, I think head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard will be signing their own firing notices, as both would likely be fired in the near future as a result of closing the book on Richardson so prematurely.
And while your here, check out the video thread below done by ESPN"s Benjamin Solak who showed just how much Richardson was let down by his supporting cast in Week 8.
