After surrendering a 13-point third-quarter lead, the New York Knicks lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. Tom Thibodeau's team has now dropped two of their first three games of the season, while Kenny Atkinson's Cavaliers roster are undefeated with four wins in four games.
A significant part of the Knicks collapse was their inability to secure offensive rebounds. They had dominated in the first half of the game, grabbing 11 offensive boards. However, after halftime, the Knicks were held to two rebounds in their opponent's paint, nullifying their ability to force multiple second-chance scoring opportunities.
When addressing the media after the game, Kenny Atkinson questioned how New York will generate enough offensive rebounds to keep last season's identity alive. He noted how it's much more difficult to crash the glass when spacing the floor in a five-out offense.
"That's gonna be interesting for them, because five-out is different," Akinson said. "You can still crash from perimeter. Obviously they don't have Mitchell in dunker and they don't have Hartenstein … Interesting to see in the long run if they can offensive-rebound out of that five-out set"

Other teams in the NBA have found ways to stay competitive on the offensive glass while running five-out offenses. The Boston Celtics are one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the NBA, primarily because they have their rebounders 'crash up' to steal long rebounds rather than committing too deep into the paint.
Thibodeau must find a way to get the best out of his new-look rotation. Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best offensive big men in league history, asking him to work closer to the basket would be a disservice. As such, New York may need to copy Boston or the Oklahoma City Thunder in their attempts to remain a fierce second-opportunity offense.
Whatever Thibodeau decides to do, he must do it fast. The Knicks need to start stacking some wins to keep pace at the top of the Eastern Conference.
If that means New York needs to adjust its identity, they're better to do so now, rather than risk being a .500 team over the opening months of the new season.
