With the New York Liberty having recently won their first WNBA title, the New York Yankees playing in the World Series, New York City FC competing in the MLS playoffs and the NBA and NFL seasons in full swing, it's been a busy fall for the professional sports teams in the Empire State.
Monday was the 31st "Sports Equinox," when each of the "Big Four" professional sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) had games on the schedule. It was a rough night, however, for the City That Never Sleeps.

The Yankees fell into a 3-0 hole in the Fall Classic following their 4-2 loss vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Giants dropped a 26-18 "Monday Night Football" decision against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The New York Knicks lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 110-104, New York City FC lost its first Eastern Conference quarterfinal tilt to FC Cincinnati, 1-0, and even the NHL's Buffalo Sabres suffered a 5-2 setback against the Florida Panthers.
According to OptaSTATS, it was a historically bad day for New York teams.
NYC is the first metro area to lose a game in MLB, MLS, NBA & NFL on the same day (regular season or postseason).

Sports Equinoxes used to be significantly rarer, as Jeff Tracy of Axios noted that there wasn't a single one from 1985 to 2001.
With "Thursday Night Football," later World Series start times and an earlier NBA regular-season tipoff, the occurrences are significantly more frequent.
There have been six Sports Equinoxes since Oct. 20, 2022.
If it were up to New York teams, they'd might want to schedule an off day for the next occurrence.
