It's not common for teams to discover gems with the No. 28 pick in the draft.
Over the last 10 years, the only 28th picks who are active starters are Jordan Poole (Wizards) and Jaden McDaniels (Timberwolves). In the 21st century, Tony Parker (Spurs) is the only No. 28 pick to make an All-NBA or All-Star team.
This year, though, the Suns may have hit the jackpot by drafting Ryan Dunn, a 6-foot-8 wing from Virginia.
In four games thus far, Dunn is averaging 7.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in just 14.8 minutes, making 1.8 threes per game at 43.8 percent. While his long-range shooting has been a plus, his perimeter defense is the attribute helping him stand out as one of the steals of this year's draft.
Dunn made life very difficult for Luka Doncic, LeBron James and James Harden while guarding those future Hall of Famers in recent games.

During Monday's game against the Lakers, Dunn played a key role in holding James to his worst shooting performance in 17 years, just two nights after doing an admirable job of replacing the injured Bradley Beal in the starting unit. In his first start, against the Mavs, he finished with 13 points and more importantly, put the clamps on Doncic.
After Monday's 109-105 win, Dunn revealed he carefully studies tape on some of the NBA's best scorers, scouting their go-to moves and preferred spots. Doing that homework helps him during games.
"Honestly, I feel great taking on the challenge of guarding superstars like [James], but obviously, I have to do my job," Dunn said.
Meanwhile, head coach Mike Budenholzer praised the rookie's willingness to not give up on certain plays, even when overwhelmed by the NBA's best scorers.
"We've talked a little bit about trying to develop a defensive identity, toughness and competitiveness, and that is probably the definition of Ryan Dunn," Budenholzer said. "I think he gives us an edge on defense. He gives us length and athleticism, takes on tough matchups. He is a rim protector, even at his size. He is making shots and in-transition layups. He is doing all of the little things that go into winning."
While it's an early sample size, the Suns are ranked fifth in defensive rating after one week of NBA action, a year after struggling on that end of the court. Besides Dunn, the likes of Royce O'Neale and Devin Booker have done well to shore up their perimeter defense. Of course, Budenholzer also deserves credit for instilling a new system.
Regardless, the Suns have to be pleased with what their getting from their No. 28 pick.
