Giants rookie shares worrisome comment amid Brian Daboll rumors

After the New York Giants fell to 2-6 on the season via this past Monday's 26-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Giants pass-rusher Brian Burns and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II said that the struggling club "needs to grow up" and must "show more passion as a team — or as leaders."

It appears rookie safety Tyler Nubin, a second-round draft pick, also thinks New York's issues this fall go beyond the fact that the club is in the middle of a roster rebuild.

"We’re not really learning from it right now," Nubin told Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com about Giants players taking positives away from errors made during games. "I feel like we’re making the same mistakes. We’ve just got to figure it out."

Such a comment won't help to silence chatter about at least Giants head coach Brian Daboll possibly being on the hot seat even though team co-owner John Mara said last week he was "committed" to keeping both Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. As much as Mara may not want to start over with a new head coach and a new quarterback next year, he likely won't tolerate his club failing to improve under Daboll through January.

While Nubin added that he is "disappointed" but not "surprised" by the Giants' overall lack of learning from mistakes, he did say he's confident the roster is "going to figure it out." That's all well and good, but it probably means nothing regarding the team's short-term future.

As of Wednesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Giants as 3.5-point underdogs for this coming Sunday's home game against the 6-2 Washington Commanders. Also on Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggested that the Giants could be a loss to Washington away from making veteran players such as cornerback Adoree' Jackson and wide receiver Darius Slayton available to contenders ahead of next Tuesday's trade deadline.

History shows some in the Big Blue locker room could begin making "business decisions" sooner rather than later if Schoen makes it clear by the end of Election Day that the New York front office is essentially punting on the remainder of the campaign. One can only guess, as of the final Wednesday of October, what such a development would mean for Daboll's future with the Giants.
