The new-look San Antonio Spurs with Chris Paul have shown flashes of upside through the early stages of the 2024-25 season. But the Paul-Victor Wembanyama one-two punch is still coming together as the pairing becomes more and more comfortable playing together.
The Spurs are 1-2 entering Wednesday's game against the undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder, and the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year has mostly picked up right where he left off. With the exception of his three-point shot (22.2 percent through three games), Wembanyama has filled up the stat sheet.
Paul, who signed a one-year deal to team up with Wembanyama and head coach Gregg Popovich, spoke about building chemistry with the 20-year-old and admitted that he's "still learning" and undergoing the early adjustments, via Paul Garcia of The Spot Up Shot:
"I'm still figuring that out. We're still learning how to play off one another," Paul said of Wembanyama. "He's not like anybody I've ever played with, so it's not so easy to do this or to do that.
"I've never seen a guy at that height do dribble-step backs, and I've never set ball screens for a 7-foot guy. So I'm still learning at the same time, too."
It's a fair take from Paul, who's averaging 7.3 points and 6.7 assists over 28 minutes through the first three games. In Paul's defense, it's likely Wembanyama has never played with a player capable of making passes and reads like Paul does, even as he approaches 40.
The Paul-Wemby duo will be a fun one to watch throughout the remainder of the season, and it'll be interesting to see if the Spurs can push their way into the playoff mix.
