Jets' Morgan Moses may have succeeded where Davante Adams failed

The same night that star wide receiver Davante Adams made his New York Jets debut in the club's 37-15 Week 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Adams delivered a  fiery locker-room speech after he noticed "a lack of energy and urgency" among his new teammates.

New York then fell to 2-6 on the season with a shocking 25-22 loss at the lowly New England Patriots last Sunday. Thus, one couldn't blame Jets fans for fearing the worst when the club trailed the Houston Texans 7-0 at halftime of Thursday night's contest.

During the break, Jets veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses followed in Adams' footsteps by speaking with his peers about how the "defense was playing lights out, and now it’s our time to shine" at MetLife Stadium. In fairness to Moses and others, the Jets would've scored a second-quarter touchdown had rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley not dropped the ball short of the goal line at the end of a carry.

Whatever Moses said worked, as the Jets outscored the Texans 21-6 over the game's final two quarters to improve to 3-6 and save their season with defensive coordinator/interim coach Jeff Ulbrich leading the charge. Ulbrich took over after Jets owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh when the team was 2-3.

"He deserved it," Moses said after the game about Ulbrich getting his first win as Saleh's temporary replacement, per The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt. "We talked about it all week: It starts with him. The energy he brings to the practice field every day with us — and just the love, the love and regard, getting us just to band together as one unit. It’s an amazing feeling. We just gotta keep the ball rolling now."

Interestingly, Moses gave his halftime talk after ESPN's Rich Cimini shared in a piece published Thursday morning that one Jets player smiled and offered a "no comment" when asked "about how it felt to be called out by a new teammate" in Pittsburgh. While Adams was with the Las Vegas Raiders until he landed with the Jets last month, New York acquired Moses this past March. He previously played for the club during the 2021 season.

Cimini added that Adams' speech "raised some eyebrows."

None of this is meant to suggest that Jets players haven't welcomed Adams into the locker room. Truthfully, fans won't care who does the talking as long as the messages produce positive results.

The Jets' next play at the Arizona Cardinals is on Nov. 10. Arizona (4-4) will host the Chicago Bears (4-3) this coming Sunday.
