Matt Eberflus answers big question about Bears after blowout loss

The Bears did not score a touchdown in their 29-9 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. They found the end zone twice in their 18-15 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 8. That game ended on a miraculous walk-off Hail Mary from Jayden Daniels, but Chicago would not have been in a position to lose the game on the final play had its offense done its job.

Chicago has scored 21.5 points per game through the first nine weeks of the season. Its passing offense has been a major issue, with just 182.1 yards per game, which ranks near the bottom of the NFL. Caleb Williams has made plenty of mistakes, but there have been times when the play-calling is predictable and overly conservative.

Even with their offensive issues, the Bears are 4-3 and still very much in the playoff hunt. They should be able to beat the Patriots at home, but their schedule gets brutal after that, with two games each against the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. The Bears also face the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

Williams is going to have to play very well over the second half of the season to keep Chicago in postseason contention. If the Bears can’t find ways to score more points, Eberflus might be pressured into demoting Waldron.
