Expectations are sky-high at Ohio State this season and getting into the College Football Playoff is a must. The Buckeyes now know where they are ranked in the initial College Football Playoff rankings for the first season of 12 teams making it.

Ohio State comes in at No. 2 in the initial rankings, behind only Oregon. If the season were to end today, the Buckeyes would host No. 12 Boise State in the opening round. Of course, the Buckeyes lost earlier in the season on the road to Oregon and that is their one negative on the season so far. Ohio State’s wins have come over Akron, Western Michigan, Marshall, Michigan State, Iowa, Nebraska, and the Nittany Lions.

Everything remains in front of the Buckeyes and beating Penn State was a huge step toward their goals. Ohio State still has Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, and Michigan left on their regular season schedule. If the Buckeyes win out they will guarantee themselves a rematch with the Ducks in the Big Ten Championship. Ohio State will get a first-round bye if they win the Big Ten. In all reality, it is possible Oregon and Ohio State play three times this year.

Ohio State’s offense has been led by playmaking wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka, and by a two-headed monster of a run game between Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. Holding Penn State to just 13 points and only six on offense was a huge statement by the defense, who is playing a good brand of ball this year as well.

Continuing to stack wins is all the Buckeyes have to do. They are now entering the most important part of their season where the stakes are just higher. The initial rankings don’t mean a ton, as plenty will change by the final rankings.
