The Milwaukee Bucks have lost six of their seven games to begin the new NBA season. Doc Rivers' team has struggled on both sides of the floor while the Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard partnership continues to be underwhelming despite the undoubted talent the two All-Stars possess.
Milwaukee's aging roster is also a cause for concern. The Bucks have limited tradable assets, and parted with multiple draft picks when moving to bring Lillard to the franchise. As such, if the front office decides its time to change course, a full rebuild may be the only answer.
According to former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins, who was speaking on Tuesday's episode of ESPN's "First Take," Giannis should stick with the team, regardless of what happens moving forward. Perkins believes Giannis "has blood on his hands" for his role in pushing Milwaukee to acquire Lillard last summer.
“Giannis is the one that made his bed, he's the one that's got to lay in it," Perkins said. "...Giannis forced their hand to trade for Damian Lillard and get Jrue Holiday out of there. Here is the thing, does Giannis have blood on his hands? Absolutely, all over this...So you got to stick it out, you got to ride this out. This is what you wanted Giannis. You knew that you and [Damian Lillard] didn't have the chemistry that y'all needed to have, especially playing the two-man game and learning one another.”
Milwaukee currently ranks 20th in the NBA in offensive rating and 22nd in defensive rating. Right now, there are no signs of life within Rivers' team. The Bucks are bad on both sides of the ball, and even their star duo has been unable to take control of games to help turn around their poor start.
Of course, Khris Middleton's injury-forced absence hasn't helped matters for the Bucks. He's a core part of their identity and a genuine swing factor during games. But if the roster can't sustain an injury, it has no chance of holding up during the postseason.
Perkins' comments are firm but fair. Giannis did push for a new star teammate. However, he likely didn't count on Jrue Holiday ending up with the Boston Celtics and completing their championship puzzle. Milwaukee must decide how long it will stick with the current roster. If things don't improve fast, the Bucks at risk of falling into NBA purgatory, and that's one of the most challenging places to escape in the sporting world.
