JJ Redick abruptly ends news conference after another loss

JJ Redick is starting to realize that the life of a NBA head coach isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

After leading the Lakers to a 3-0 start, Redick has gone 1-4 in his last four games, including a blowout loss to the Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Granted, Redick didn't have the services of his best player, Anthony Davis. But he was also going up against a Memphis team missing two starters — Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart.

The stage was set for the Lakers to bounce back from a loss to the Pistons, arguably the worst team in the league, just a few nights before. Instead, Los Angeles looked lethargic, getting out-rebounded 18-6 in the first quarter, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

While the Lakers tried to go on a few runs in the second half, they never once looked like a threat to the Ja Morant-led Grizzlies, who out-scored the Lakers 72-61 in the second half en route to a 131-114 win.

The biggest issue for the Lakers, which plagued them through their 1-4 road trip, was their inability to get stops. Wednesday's game marked the second time the Lakers conceded 130-plus points within the last week. They have now plummeted to No. 28 in defensive rating, conceding 118.8 points a night per 100 possessions.

Even on offense, they've had to rely far too much on LeBron James and Davis. Without his co-star on Wednesday, James attempted an uncharacteristic 24 shots, finishing with 39 points, seven rebounds and six assists. But his herculean effort was simply not enough considering the lackluster performances of D'Angelo Russell (12 points, 4-of-12 FG) and Austin Reaves (19 points, 7-of-17 FG).

Redick storms out of news conference

After the loss, Redick praised James while calling out the rest of the Lakers for their subpar showing.

"Almost 40 years old and played the hardest on our team. It says a lot about him," Redick said of James.

When asked why he played Russell for only 22 minutes, Redick did not hold back on his criticism of the guard, suggesting that he "fell back to old habits" especially on the defensive side of the ball.

When asked how he would address the apparent lack of effort from other players, an irked Redick said, "I just did" before storming out of the news conference.

As Redick made his way out of the room, he shouted back at the media, "First thing I said to them," per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

It seems the first-year head coach is feeling the pinch of coaching a high-profile team. These growing pains could serve him well as the season progresses, but it could also backfire if he continues to call out players for their lack of effort. The Lakers should be wary.
