It's somewhat of a tradition for NBA players, especially stars, to be booed when they return to their old stomping grounds. As such, it was par for the course when Paul George was serenaded with boos by Clippers fans when his 76ers visited the Intuit Dome on Wednesday.
George, though, was shocked at the reaction he received from the fan base for two specific reasons: a) he's a native of Southern California, and b) the Clippers let him walk, not the other way around.
After his Sixers suffered a 110-98 loss, George didn't hold back on the Clippers fan base, calling them "stupid" for misdirecting their anger at him rather than the organization that let him walk as a free agent.
"I mean, you know, it's stupid," George said, via SI's Joey Lynn. "I mean, I was a free agent. It wasn't something that I demanded a trade or went against the team here. Like, I was a free agent. The team presented something [contract] that was team-friendly, and I did what was best for me in that situation. So, there were some cheers. I appreciate them. Those were the ones that I played hard for. The boos — I didn't get it. I still don't get it when I go back to Indy. But it is what it is. It's sports. That's what's in sports. Yeah, I look forward to next year being here and more boos."

George, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, was booed for most of the night, even when the Clippers played a tribute video on the big board. Furthermore, he was also showered with boos every time he touched the ball and was taunted by the Clippers' menacing "wall" with messages such as "PG, think before you speak."

While the boos were expected, the reaction was more hostile than imagined, especially since George led the Clippers to their first Western Conference Finals berth in history in 2021.
Shortly after joining the Sixers, George revealed he was "disrespected" by the first offer the Clippers made him in free agency. Ultimately, George was willing to take a three-year, $150 million contract similar to the one Kawhi Leonard received midway through the 2023-24 season. Instead, the Clippers lowballed him again, propelling him to join the Sixers, who met his asking price.
