Auburn HC Hugh Freeze says he doesn't hear the boos from fans

It has been a tough 2024 season for Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers.

Auburn is just a few seasons removed from being a championship contender, mind you. Actually, check that. The Tigers were last in the championship picture when it was still the BCS. They lost the 2013 BCS national championship to Florida State. The last time they won it all was when Cam Newton was a Tiger, back in the 2010 BCS Championship Game.

So OK, things haven't been going so good for Auburn as of late, especially since Freeze is fielding a 3-6 squad that just lost to Vanderbilt at home, 17-7.

The fans weren't too happy about that on The Plains, but Freeze isn't hearing any of that.

“I didn’t hear any. I don’t hear that,” Freeze said when asked about boos in a recent news conference, according to On3. “We’re just not consistent enough, obviously in critical downs offensively. I think our defense is playing really at a high level. Offensively, when we’re not able to create explosive runs, it seems that we really struggle to protect the passer and to throw and catch some. But you know, we’re not playing very well in special teams, so that’s a bad combination.”

Freeze wants to turn it into a football discussion, and as a head coach that makes sense, but it's going to quickly turn into a record discussion at Auburn if he doesn't get the Tigers into a bowl game.

He was 6-7 in his first season with the Tigers with a loss in the Music City Bowl. Not being able to get Auburn to a bowl game, or even making a bowl and losing, could end up bring out more than just boo birds for Freeze.

That scenario could also come with a pink slip.
