Elite NFL coaching duo is repeating history on defense

The Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated, and their defense, ranked fifth in the league, is a big part of that success.

In their last 29 games, including the playoffs, the Chiefs have allowed fewer than 28 points.

The only other team with a longer streak in this millennium is the Philadelphia Eagles over 34 games from 2000-02, per NFL senior researcher Tony Holzman-Escareno.

Incredibly, there's a significant connection between those two teams that directly correlates to those streaks.

Andy Reid was head coach in Philadelphia then and currently leads Kansas City. Current defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was also a defensive assistant in Philadelphia under Reid during those same years.

The Chiefs have allowed the fifth-least number of touchdowns this season (16) and are third-best against the run. They've also allowed the fifth-least yards per game in the league.

It seems Reid and Spagnuolo have perfected what they developed in Philadelphia, winning a Super Bowl in their most recent streak.

The Eagles during their historic stretch made three consecutive playoff appearances but wouldn't make the Super Bowl until 2004.

A lot can change in 20 years as Kansas City is aiming to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.
