Absolutely nothing was going right for Justin Allgaier halfway through Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series championship race at Phoenix.
After crashing in practice on Friday, Allgaier and his backup car were flying through the field — until a restart violation on lap 101 forced him to come down pit road to serve his penalty.
Allgaier's situation was compounded when it was revealed he sped on pit road while serving his initial penalty, putting him even further behind.
While Allgaier eventually got back on the lead lap, he still had quite the mountain to climb. On the lap 163 restart, Allgaier was third of the Championship Four, running in 11th.
But on the race's final long green-flag run, Allgaier's Camaro came to life. After getting around his JRM teammates in Sam Mayer and Connor Zilisch, Allgaier got to the back bumper of championship leader Cole Custer, tapping his bumper to take away the championship lead.
All Allgaier needed to do now was hang on for six more laps.

But with three laps to go, Allgaier's rotten luck continued. A spinning Leland Honeyman Jr. brought out the caution flag, sending the race into overtime.
With the field coming down pit road, Allgaier restarted sixth on lap 206, behind Hill and Custer.
It was in turn three on lap 206 that Allgaier ensured his name would forever be etched in NASCAR history.
A three-wide move by Allgaier shot him from sixth to second in one corner, as he passed both Hill and Custer to take over the championship lead.
While another caution flag flew for a wrecked Parker Retzlaff, Allgaier had enough of a gap to cruise to the championship. Riley Herbst passed Allgaier in the final corner in order to win the race, but Allgaier had his eyes on the big prize.
As Allgaier rode around Phoenix on the cool-down lap, nearly the entire field drove up beside him to congratulate a man who after 14 years of full-time competition, had finally reached the mountaintop.

JUSTIN ALLGAIER IS A NASCAR XFINITY SERIES CHAMPION! pic.twitter.com/aDLob24Sff
It was similar to Dale Earnhardt's 1998 Daytona 500 victory, in that nearly the entire garage area came together to celebrate a driver who had long been denied one of the biggest prizes in racing.
With Jr Motorsports owner Dale Eearnhardt Jr. in attendance to celebrate his driver, Allgaier's championship was the culmination of 14 years of dedication.
It's a story that only NASCAR can tell to the fullest.
