It was a tough way for LSU to essentially miss out on the new 12-team College Football Playoff. The Tigers picked up their third loss of the season on Saturday, and it hurt even worse because it wasn't even close.
Never mind the fact that the loss came at the hands of Alabama, one of LSU's biggest rivals. The Tigers lost 42-13 while turning the ball over three times. The Tigers allowed the Tide to rush for 311 total yards on 6.5 yards per carry. That included 185 yards and four rushing touchdowns for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.
According to LSU head coach Brian Kelly, that type of loss hurts more than just the sting of likely missing out on the CFP.
"Look, they’re disappointed. We’re disappointed in the way we performed, you know," Kelly said after the game (h/t On3). "We’re not going, these guys are not like, ‘Hey, we’re out of the playoffs. They’re disappointed and I’m disappointed that we didn’t live up to the standards of LSU Football. That affects us more than the damn playoffs.”
With games against Florida (4-5), Vanderbilt (6-4) and Oklahoma (5-5) still remaining, LSU should be favored to finish 9-3, but even that's not a guarantee if the Tigers go out and play the type of stinker they put up against Alabama.
Kelly needs to get his team right in a hurry.
