In late October, the Baltimore Ravens acquired former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers to give quarterback and MVP candidate Lamar Jackson another weapon amid Baltimore's pursuit of a Super Bowl title.
While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about facing Johnson during this coming Sunday's game between the AFC North rivals. Tomlin strongly suggested he isn't losing sleep regarding what Johnson may or may not accomplish in the Week 11 contest.
"I hadn't thought a lot about it," Tomlin said, as shared by Joe Clark of Steelers Depot. "He's not on a lot of their video and so at this stage of the week, I don't know that I've weighed what he might mean to the matchup."
Tomlin is right about Johnson largely being a non-factor across his first two games with the Ravens. Thus far, the 28-year-old has recorded just one catch for six yards with Baltimore. Nevertheless, it's understandable some may wonder if the Ravens will try to get Johnson some additional touches against the club that made him a third-round draft pick in 2019 and traded him to Carolina this past March.
Johnson received some criticism while featuring for Pittsburgh last fall after he failed to jump on a fumble during a game, and he later left little doubt during a different contest that he was frustrated over a lack of targets. He reportedly wanted a fresh start elsewhere last offseason but seemingly desired a change of scenery again after the Panthers lost seven of their first eight games of the ongoing campaign.
However Johnson feels about facing his former employer this weekend, Tomlin indicated he's more concerned about having to deal with proven commodities such as Jackson and running back/Offensive Player of the Year candidate Derrick Henry.
"They got more significant pieces with larger roles that are occupying my attention at this part of the week," Tomlin added.
Time will tell if Tomlin will live to regret that last comment. As of Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 7-2 Steelers as 3.5-point underdogs for Sunday's game against the 7-3 Ravens.
