The Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-4) have been on a tough slide since starting the season in much-improved fashion compared to 2023.
Star freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola has been a big component in second-year head coach Matt Rhule's reinvention of the once-powerhouse program.
But Raiola's days in Lincoln could be numbered, as one college football reporter suggests.
"I can guarantee you with 100 percent certainty that [Raiola] and his camp have received tampering phone calls," On3 Sports' Robin Washut told "College Sports on SiriusXM" Wednesday.
"If Matt Rhule didn't make a move, the odds of Dylan Raiola not being here next season go up dramatically... they had to do something."@RobinWashut tells @ESPN_Schick and @BigAntHerron about the Huskers hiring Dana Holgorsen and how it could help keep their star QB at Nebraska. pic.twitter.com/Vk7GDKGePw

However, Washut believes Rhule may have made a key hire this season as a preemptive measure to secure Raiola's long-term commitment to the team.
"If Matt Rhule didn't make a move, the odds of Dylan Raiola not being here next season go up dramatically... they had to do something," he said.
That move was promoting former West Virginia and Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen to offensive coordinator on Monday. Holgorsen was originally brought in at the beginning of the season as an offensive analyst.
Nebraska has lost three straight games since starting the season 5-1 and matching its 2023 win total.
It's considered tampering when a coach or staff makes direct or indirect contact with a Division I player without NCAA authorization, in this case prior to when the December transfer window opens.
Washut did not explicitly accuse any specific coaches or programs of tampering with Raiola, but the freshman has certainly gained increased attention for his talents this year.
The 6-foot-3 19-year-old has tallied 1,921 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games played, giving the Cornhuskers an opportunity to become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016.
