Intriguing ACC dual-threat QB to reportedly enter transfer portal

Following his recent benching, Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos will reportedly enter the transfer portal, according to On3's Pete Nakos on Wednesday.

Castellanos was benched midway through the Eagles' 37-31 victory over Syracuse this past Saturday, and it seems like that is going to end up being his final appearance in a Boston College uniform.

In addition to the report about the junior quarterback entering the transfer portal, Eagles head coach Bill O'Brien revealed during a radio interview on 93.7 WEEI-FM on Thursday that Castellanos had left the team for the remainder of the season.

"[Castellanos has] decided to leave. We wish Tommy the best. We think very highly of him, and we wish him the best. But we’re going to rally around Grayson [James]. We have a lot of confidence in Grayson," O'Brien said.

During the interview, O'Brien also shared that he met with Castellanos this past Sunday and let him know that Grayson James was going to be taking over as Boston College's starting quarterback moving forward.

This didn't sit well with Castellanos, and he felt it was in his best interest to leave the team now instead of sticking around for the next few weeks to cheer on his teammates.

Many will likely label his decision as selfish, but in today's version of college football, with NIL deals and the transfer portal, players no longer have to sit around and continue to remain with a school that doesn't make the most of their skill set.

Could Castellanos have handled the situation better? Possibly, but the now former Eagles quarterback is in self-preservation mode, and he wants to make sure he remains healthy for whatever team he ends up playing for next season.

As for the 2024 campaign, Castellanos had put up solid numbers with Boston College before his departure. In eight games this season, he completed a career-high 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,366 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.

But despite Castellanos's success as a passer this year, his rushing numbers have been significantly lower than they were last season with the Eagles. During his eight appearances with Boston College this year, he only rushed for a total of 194 yards, which is much less than the 1,113 yards he gained on the ground with the school last season.

O'Brien installing an offense this year that is designed more for a pocket passer than a dual-threat quarterback like Castellanos had an impact on his rushing numbers being much lower this season.

One can imagine that the schools willing to utilize his rushing skills are going to be the ones with the best chance to land him in the transfer portal.
