Grant Williams' best season came during the 2021-22 campaign. He was a core part of Ime Udoka's Boston Celtics team that made a run to the NBA Finals. Williams' reputation as a stud 3-and-D wing hit fever pitch, especially after a regular-season performance that saw him lock down Nikola Jokic.
After that defensive masterclass, Williams gave himself the nickname of 'Batman,' although it never stuck.
Since leaving the Celtics in 2023, Williams has seen his value around the league tumble. He had a disappointing and short-lived spell with the Dallas Mavericks before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets. However, he's slowly been rebuilding his reputation this season.
On Saturday, Williams reminded everyone what he's capable of as a defensive lynchpin by producing a strong defensive performance against Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
“I think Grant really took this challenge head-on in guarding one of the greatest players in the game," Miles Bridges told the media. "Grant did a great job and I think guys really bought into the assignment in having Grant's back. It was great individual defense by Grant and our goal was to be able to help him. It was real cool to see the team take on the challenge.”
Williams is currently averaging 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 42.2% from the field and 36.1% from three-point range. He has found his role as a reliable wing off the bench, who is capable of sliding into the starting unit when required.
There's no denying what Williams is capable of when in rhythm. However, he must string together a good year or two of performances to help undo the damage his stint in Dallas did to his reputation.
If the Hornets can continue improving, and Williams sticks as a core part of the rotation, he could find himself becoming a coveted role player when his current deal runs out in 2027.
