The straight-sets loss to Jannik Sinner in Sunday's ATP Finals final does not do justice to Taylor Fritz's phenomenal 2024 season.
The World No. 4 made history entering Sunday's match, becoming the first American man since Andre Agassi in 1999 to reach the finals of the U.S. Open and ATP Finals in the same calendar year, not to mention the first ATP Finals finalist since James Blake in 2006. Earlier in the year, the uber-consistent Fritz also became the first American to reach the second week of all four majors in a year since 2003.
As the runner-up at the ATP Finals, Fritz put up a valiant fight against Sinner, combining for the highest performance rating score for any match in 2024. While the final score of 6-4, 6-4 suggests otherwise, the 27-year-old produced quality tennis and pushed the Italian to the brink by winning 46/61 of his first-serve points and connecting on 20 winners. Ultimately, Fritz's 15 unforced errors caused his undoing, but his serve and return quality proved he's worthy of being a top-5 ranked player.

After Sunday's loss, Fritz declared that his World No. 4 ranking isn't a fluke and he truly believes he's one of the five best players in the world.
"Now I'm ranked where I'm at. I feel like I belong," Fritz said, via ATP. "It's a different feeling. It's been a great year. That gives me a lot of confidence to have that belief. That's a huge part of having the big results. The goals I set for myself at the start of the year was to finish Top 5."
If Fritz can make marginal improvements, there's no reason why he can't be the one to break the 21-year streak of American men not winning majors next season. As Sinner has proven over the past 12 months, a player can make significant strides between seasons. The Italian was 22-27 against top-10 players entering the 2024 season, and a year later, he's nearly invincible and on top of the world. Perhaps Fritz can enjoy a similar career resurgence in 2025.
"I definitely need to get more explosive and quicker in the first step," Fritz said of improvements he can make. "If I can just get a little quicker off the split step, it will help my return of serve a lot. If I can just put myself in slightly better chances to break serve, I think that's going to be a huge improvement. That's something I've done already, but I think there's still a lot of room for improvement there."
