Watch: Capitals' Alex Ovechkin leaves game with injury against Utah

Just when Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin looked to be invincible after a hot start to the season, disaster may have struck.

The 39-year old took a rough leg-on-leg hit from Jack McBain in the third period of Washington's contest against the Utah Hockey Club on Monday.

He laid on the ice for several seconds before gingerly skating to the bench, hardly putting any pressure on his left leg.

From the video replay, it appears Ovechkin's left knee may have extended inward awkwardly upon contact with McBain.

During a commercial break, Ovechkin attempted to skate and test out his leg but almost immediately went back to the bench and walked carefully down the tunnel to the locker room, ending his night prematurely.

Before the unfortunate collision, Ovechkin notched two goals on three shots — his 867th and 868th goals of his career — inching ever closer to Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky's all-time record (894).

He leads the league in goals with 15 and became the first player in league history aged 39 or older to reach the mark.

Ovechkin's first goal of the night victimized Utah's Connor Ingram, the 178th different goalie he's scored on in his career. That tied him with the great Jaromir Jagr for most all-time.

The Russian machine's output Monday marked his fourth multi-goal game of the year and the 177th in his career, only Gretzky has more (189). He's also the first player in NHL history to reach 100 multi-goal games on the road.

Washington won it's 13th game of the year, 6-2, over Utah and will return home to host the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

Updates from the team on Ovechkin's condition will be closely monitored but he will have two days to recover before potentially taking to the ice again to continue his incredible season.
