No other team has faced the gauntlet of tests No. 2 Ohio State has this season. On Saturday at home, the Buckeyes will face their third top-five opponent, taking on unbeaten Indiana (10-0) in possibly the biggest football game in Hoosiers history.
Under first-year Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti, No. 5 Indiana is off to the best start in school history. With an explosive offense averaging 43.9 points, Indiana has dominated most of its opponents.
However, the Hoosiers haven’t faced a team of Ohio State's caliber. Indiana's most notable wins have come against Michigan (5-5) and Washington (4-4), teams that bear no resemblance to the schools' College Football Playoff teams from last season.
In contrast, the Buckeyes lost at No. 1 Oregon 32-31 on Oct.12 and have since outscored opponents 117-37 — that stretch includes a 20-13 road win over No. 4 Penn State. Thanks in large part to a defense that has allowed just 10.3 points per game, Ohio State leads the nation in margin of victory (27.5).
With a trip to the Big Ten Championship game — and perhaps the College Football Playoff — on the line, the stakes for the Buckeyes couldn’t be higher. Their key to a victory will lie heavily on one major factor: defense.

Against Indiana’s high-powered offense — ranked second in the nation for scoring to Miami — defensive coordinator Jim Knowles must keep his unit sharp, starting with cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun.
Ohio State's corners have been inconsistent in man-to-man coverage, and opponents have exposed this weakness in nearly every game since the loss to Oregon.
Although Ohio State boasts the nation’s top scoring defense, it ranks sixth in passing yards allowed (160.1 YPG), a potential Achilles' heel against Indiana’s high-powered offense. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke (71.8 completion percentage) has played efficiently and will likely take deep shots, testing Ohio State’s secondary with one of the cleanest offenses in college football.
While Indiana’s offensive line showed some vulnerability under pressure from Michigan's pass rush in its last outing, the Hoosiers come into this game well-rested after a bye week. With time to recharge and study film, they’ll be prepared for the tough challenge awaiting them in Columbus.
For Ohio State to keep Rourke in check, cornerbacks Burke and Igbinosun must lock down Indiana’s passing game. If they can deliver, along with defensive playmakers Caleb Downs, (safety), Sonny Styles (safety) and Jack Sawyer (defensive end) showing up big, the defense could be the difference in securing a big win Saturday.
