Before the New England Patriots fell to 3-8 on the season via this past Sunday's 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Patriots icons Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman offered some high praise for New England rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the game that Maye "looks like a stud" and "looks like he's going to be a special player for a long time."
During a Monday afternoon appearance on Boston sports radio station WEEI, Maye noted he'd like to thank Gronkowski the next time the 22-year-old sees the future Hall of Famer. With that said, Maye isn't getting a big head regarding what he's accomplished since becoming the starter in Week 6.
"I think it’s more of a don’t get too high when you feel like you’re playing well, and don’t get too low when things aren’t going your way," Maye said, as shared by Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "So it’s kind of a tough battle because I do feel like I’m making some plays and we’re moving the ball offensively."
According to Pro Football Reference, Maye enters Week 12 ranked 14th in the NFL with a 59.2 QBR and 15th with a 66.8% completion percentage (127-of-190) for the season. He tossed nine touchdown passes and six interceptions over his first seven games (six starts) to go along with 260 rushing yards and a score on 28 carries.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Maye third among the betting favorites at +2500 odds to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
"I think we need to figure that part out," Maye said about his growth as a player leading to wins. "But at the same time, I think we got those guys and in that room, a lot of different guys making plays, and I think we’re just a few plays away."
Maye added that he wants "the ball to be in my hands with the chance to win it" after he threw a game-sealing interception late in the loss to the Rams. He'll have a chance to bounce back from that moment when the Patriots play at the 4-6 Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
On Tuesday, DraftKings Sportsbook had New England as a seven-point underdog against Miami.
