College Football Playoff rankings: Georgia back in, Boise State in bye-week spot

The latest College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night, and there were a couple of major changes.

The biggest of those changes: Tennessee dropping from the No. 7 spot down to the first team out following its loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday and Georgia climbing back into a playoff position thanks to that win.

The other big change comes in the Big 12 where BYU goes from the No. 6 ranking (and a potential bye week), all the way down to a No. 14 ranking and the No. 12 seed in the playoff field.

Boise State, the top team in the Mountain West conference, moves up from the No. 13 ranking and the No. 12 seed to the No. 12 ranking and a potential bye week in the No. 4 seed in the bracket.

Here is a look at the complete top-25 rankings and the playoff bracket as it would sit right now:

In terms of the overall rankings, the top five remains unchanged, including the four Big 10 teams (Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State and Indiana) still occupying their spots.

SMU is also one of the first two teams out for the second week in a row.

These rankings also create some absolutely massive games this week.

One of the biggest involves two of those Big 10 teams when No. 5 Indiana visits No. 2 Ohio State. That game might very well determine whether or not the Hoosiers get a spot in the 12-team field. They might not have to actually win the game, but they at least have to be competitive in it given the concerns over their strength of schedule and strength of victory this season.

The other huge game involves No. 19 Army playing No. 6 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium. Army still has everything in front of it when it comes to the AAC Conference championship game, but a win over Notre Dame would significantly strengthen its resume.

No. 14 BYU and No. 21 Arizona State also play a massive game on Saturday, while No. 16 Colorado just simply needs to keep winning games. If Colorado wins out, including the Big 12 Championship game, it will be in.
