Report shares if NFL personnel believe Giants will retain Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen

Some assumed the New York Giants' benching of starting quarterback Daniel Jones in favor of QB3 Tommy DeVito earlier this week proved that general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll received a guarantee from team co-owner John Mara that they would hold onto their jobs this offseason.

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler offered an update on the situation for a piece published Wednesday.

"I've talked to people in and around that situation who believe Mara really does want to keep them both, with the notion that he has been cycling through coaches every 2-3 years and would very much like to stop," Fowler explained. "Thus far, he has bought into the Daboll/Schoen vision and trusted them to make the decision to bench Jones. ...Others around the league are a tad more skeptical, with some people who follow these types of things closely forecasting it more like 50-50. If it's Week 17, MetLife Stadium is half full and the Giants are stuck on two wins, Mara's stance will be tested."

While Schoen helped finalize the 2022 Giants roster that Daboll guided to a playoff berth and a road postseason win, the club finished last season at 6-11 before Big Blue became arguably the worst team of the ongoing campaign. Daboll reportedly believes that DeVito gives the Giants the best chance to earn a win over the 4-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming Sunday, but the coach could turn to backup Drew Lock for the Thanksgiving Day game at the lowly Dallas Cowboys if New York falls to 2-9.

Interestingly, star defensive lineman and Giants team captain Dexter Lawrence raised some eyebrows when he said Tuesday he felt Jones is still "the best quarterback on the team." One wonders how Mara could react to such a take if the Giants get embarrassed with either DeVito or Lock in the lineup.

"...Daboll likes the way DeVito plays the position -- loose and free, not stiff," Fowler added. "There are plays to be made in this offense, and DeVito, despite his flaws, will at least attempt to make them."

DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Giants as 5.5-point underdogs against the Buccaneers as of Wednesday morning. Fans may flock to MetLife Stadium to watch DeVito, the popular New Jersey native, play against Tampa Bay. Still, some customers could dump their tickets for the season's final three home games if "Tommy Cutlets" looks overwhelmed in his first start since last Christmas.
